Time Truly Flies…

…especially when you’re having fun. I can’t believe I’ve failed to post anything in nearly two weeks. Where did the time go? In the whirlwind of traveling to see our newest grandson and going on a cruise to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary, I found myself relishing being present in the moment.

Now, I find myself sitting in the lobby of the Dona Sheley Women’s Center still experiencing the roll of the ship even though we’ve been home two days. We postponed the biopsy because we wanted to swim and snorkel while on vacation and now it’s back to facing grim realities.

I am inspired by my wife. Nothing phases her; we could be starting the long battle against breast cancer or maybe it’s nothing. She faithfully and reverently says, “God’s got this.” Not unlike the three young Jewish men who refused to bow and worship an ancient king even under the threat of losing their lives. I’m proud of her.

Of course, for the past two weeks I haven’t even thought about the gym. Well, that’s sort of a lie. I did check out the gym on the ship and briefly envisioned myself working out, faithfully. Ha! Who was I kidding! This does, however, pose the credible issue facing a sixty year-old and that’s, “How do I get back into my routine?”

As a 20 or 30 something, I could miss a month, or even six (on deployment), and jump right back into it. A little muscle soreness that first week but still a piece of cake. Not now, no sir! Too much at stake to risk just picking up where you left off. Gottta ease back into it. The old adage, three steps forward and two steps back. The KEY, though. You have to get back at it. No giving up.

Here’s the plan.

  • Wednesday – swim, bike, run.
  • Thursday – full body workout and cardio
  • Friday – swim, bike, run and some kettlebells.

Fight for your health, whether it’s against the big C-word or just trying to maintain functional mobility and strength.
