Can’t you just embrace old age and accept the natural decline of your body? I’ve actually heard a rendition of this question from close friends and family, but more often have sensed others questioning why I invest time in the gym. My short answer is, “I want to be able to stand back up after using the toilet, regardless of my age.”
Here’s the long answer. Your quality of life is directly proportional to your functional strength and agility. Go anywhere (State fair, local festival, Walmart) and you’ll see the lasting consequences of ignoring one’s health. Whether it’s a 50 year old carrying around a portable O2 tank or a sixty year old requiring the assistance of a walker, you can’t miss the casualties of indifference and apathy. This is a serious conversation we should be having with one another. It’s akin to life and death. The lifestyle changes you make now, along with the new habits you form, will dictate exactly what your last three decades of life will be like. All you have to do is identify three examples of either or and ask yourself, “Which do I want to be?”
